The Refectory

The refectory is a large gothic room with three cross vaults in the ceiling.  The monks took their meals in silence while one of them read sacred texts from a pulpit which no longer exists.   The eating space was furnished with tables arranged according to the age of the brothers.  Place settings were modest:  a wooden fork and spoon, a knife, two little cups, a double-handled one for wine and water.    Food met the standards of people who observed the rule of fast and abstinence and was purely vegetarian.
